Understanding Noninvasive Brain Stimulation with Marom Bikson
As many of you may already know, I am passionate about teaching others how to enhance/optimize brain function, especially when it isn't working properly (After all, I am a brain doctor!!!). A few years ago, I stumbled across a novel technique called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). TDCS involves applying a low level of electrical current to the brain by applying electrodes to the head and connecting them to a power source. There is a growing body of evidence to support tDCS's effectiveness in alleviating depression, chronic pain, and addiction, as well as other neurological/psychiatric disorders, and has also been purported to enhance cognitive functioning in healthy individuals.
In my quest to inform and educate about noninvasive brain stimulation, I crossed paths with Dr Marom Bikson, and was very fortunate to speak with him. Dr Bikson is a biomedical engineer, researcher, and creator of neuromodec.com. He has gained much research and technical experience in transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) throughout his training and scientific work.
In my interview, Dr Bikson discusses what tDCS is, how it can help those with neurological/psychiatric diseases and potentially enhance cognition in healthy individuals. Our talk also addresses tDCS safety and also touches on the barriers faced in using tDCS.
Please visit Dr Bikson's website neuromodec.com for more information about tDCS. Visit his website for more information about the 2018 NYC NEUROMODULATION CONFERENCE & NANS SUMMER SERIES, organized by neuromodec.com and the North American Neuromodulation Society.
